Perfect Past
Pretérito Perfeito talks about concluded actions and it uses adverbs that indicate specific moments in the past.
Some examples are:

Sentences using perfect past tense
I have never been to Rio.
Eu estudei Português por dois meses.
I studied Português for two months.
Eu fiz o trabalho que ele me pediu.
I did the assignment that he had requested.
We visited São Paulo before visiting Rio.
Imperfeito, describes actions that were not concluded, past descriptions, habits and behaviors. It is also used to talk about things that happened at the same time, in the past.

Sentences using perfect and imperfect together
When a specific action is interrupted by another, we can use both tenses:
I was reading when the lights went out in the whole neighborhood.
